Funky Bye
It came as a complete surprise to me that Dave Brown died on the 13TH May 2023.
I was able to listen to two shows that kept me abreast of the much-wanted - Soul, Funk, and Jazz tunes that were all the rage from the early 1980s onwards via listening to them over the weekends
You either listened to
1. Robie Vincent - The Robbie Vincent show - If it moves, funk it (Saturday Mornings)
2. Dave Brown - Boogie Down with Dave Brown show (Saturday Evenings)
Dave Brown's iconic show “Boogie Down with Dave Brown” was a huge success during the early to middle 1980s in regards to – Soul, Funk, and Jazz music lovers from the East Anglian region of the UK.
He often greeted his Phone callers with this catchphrase of his via this.
Hello to you ??????? and big Funky Hi to you
Here is a little bit of history that I think you need to know.
The Life and Times and the Death of DJ Presenter Dave Brown from the Uk
Local radio came to Suffolk in October 1975, when Radio Orwell started broadcasting from the studios situated in Electric House, Ipswich. After winning a broadcast license from the Uk government.
Until 1964, when the pirate station known as Radio Caroline came on the air, off Felixstowe, the only commercial radio to be heard was Radio Luxembourg, operating in the evenings. Radio Orwell was among the first in the region.
One of my personal and favorite shows on the station was a show called “Boogie Down with Dave Brown”.
However, Dave started his broadcasting career in the early '80s for BBC Radio Medway (which later became BBC Radio Kent).
It was during this period that he created and presented the show that allowed him to gain a reputation for having one of the listened to shows in the Uk with his Soul Show on FRIDAY night.
Here is one of the shows that he created (The Year is 1982)

DAVE BROWN - RADIO MEDWAY - KENT - 1982
Dave Brown also worked at Radio Orwell and Radio Saxon. It was there that he created the “Boogie Down with Dave Brown” shows for the times that were Saturdays from 18:00 to 21:00 hours.
The show was a huge success in the East Anglian area, especially here in Ipswich town, England. It was a must to, listen to show for the people of that area that loved Soul, Funk, and Jazz music at the time.
DAVE BROWN - RADIO ORWELL - APRIL 1986
Dave made occasional appearances after his Radio Show. When he visited one of the major nightclubs of the time here in Ipswich called the 1st Floor Club, based in Tacket Street, Ipswich Town during the 1980s.
At one time it was the only late-night in Ipswich town center venue which opened in the 1960s.
Comedians of the like such as Bob Monkhouse, Bernard Manning, and Ronnie Corbett plus magician Paul Daniels, actor Warren Mitchell, and Radio One DJ Kenny Everett all appeared at the First Floor nightspot.
However, Dave Brown acted as an MC within the 1st Floor Club, especially when he was asked to introduce a new USA or Uk, Soul, Funk, or Jazz/Funk acts
The club name changed and was to be known as Liberty's in future years, and then Fire and Ice after that, before closing in 2010. Then in 2016, it was converted into luxury flats.
Dave later left the BBC in October 1987 to join Invicta Radio, the commercial radio station for Kent. And moving on again in 1991 to pursue other business Interests.
He bought the Nightclub called "The Maltings" based in Stowmarket, Suffolk, which eventually changed its name over the years to - "Xcel", which ran from 1990 until 2014.
Dave, when he presented his shows always gave us his famous "Funky Hi" greeting over the airwaves (As mentioned earlier).
Thanks for all those shows that you completed in your lifetimes, Dave. Thanks and a Funky bye until we all meet again.
