Eclectic Habits of Some of Your Favourite Musicians
The top 1% of artists earn 77% of recorded music income, leaving the other 99% of artists to fight for the remaining 33% by forcing their way to stardom through various outrageous acts.
As the British R&B and soul music scene continues to grow from strength to fury, more mainstream media and awards shows take note of the superb sound and talent in the industry.
However, it is still tough out there for most musicians. While some celebrities are known for their outstanding guitar solos and stunning vocals, some musicians have become known more for their eccentric behavior.
Pre-Show Behaviours of Some of the Greats
In 2013, during the Mrs. Carter Show World Tour, Beyoncé explained that in order to help ensure a great performance and de-stress before a show she has to indulge in prayer.
She famously said, “I sit in my massage chair while they do my hair and makeup and I have an hour of peace and I have a playlist that I listen to every day.”
While seemingly a little OCD, it appears to be fairly normal, right? It pales in comparison to her modern-day soul music counterparts.
One of R&B´s most previously famed artists R. Kelly, for example, is one of the most eccentric musicians in the genre as well as in the music industry in general.
He once stated that "Osama Bin Laden is the only one who knows what I’m going through.”
Strange Things Musicians Have Done
Bruce Springsteen once insured his voice for $6 million to act as a safety net if anything were to happen to him, which might seem a little over-the-top until you meet one of the music industry's most out-there performers.
While not a part of the soul genre, reggae icon Lee 'Scratch' Perry might take the cake for the most eccentric behavior as he was spotted walking backward, baptizing people with a garden hose, and even worshiping bananas during one studio recording.
He also put a curse on the BBC, which he reportedly refuses to lift until they agree to play his music 24/7. It seems a bit too early to tell whether or not the top soul music stars of today such as Moss Kenna, Mahalia, and Col3trane will develop the same eccentricity.
Is Eccentricity the Key to Stardom?
It seems that most soul music artist has their normal pre-show rituals and habits they like to indulge in.
This makes sense considering that they are about to perform in front of millions of people or record their heart-wrenching, soul-spilling music in a studio for everyone to hear.
The most eccentric artists, however, seem to be grappling with other creative forces inside of their heads that manifest themselves in superstition, shenanigans, and outright crazy acts.
