Roxanne Shante, the Rapper is now back with a Movie - Roxanne Shante biopic - 2018
There is a buzz that's happening within the music world of hip-hop of late.
It's not a certain record that's causing the buzz. Or a New Star within the music-making machine. In fact, it is a star from back in the day.
Roxanne Shante. Remembers her? The rapper is out of the Borough of Queens, New York City USA. If you are from New York City, you surely will remember her that’s for sure.
I remember her from back in the days of the 1980s, in regards to the records that I bought from her in which she seemed to demolish rappers in her wake.
Wow My favorite from her from my perspective was the track called"Have a Nice Day". Wow, I just loved how she took apart theBDP PRODUCTIONS TEAM (NEW YORK, USA) AFTER THAT RESPONSE RECORD.
Well, the news is just about a movie that is to be made about her time when she made this Hip Hop response record and more.
Not just any response record. But one that helped changed the fortunes and direction of hip-hop music forever.
Roxanne Shante (Her real name is Lolita Gooden) was 14when she decided to front a response record against the group called UTFO (aka Untouchable Force Organization)and their release, all those years ago.
Legend has it that one night Shante overheard a Radio conversation on WHBI’s Radio station (New York, USA) which comprised Tyrone Williams, Mister Magic, and Marley Marl. They were discussing the fact that UTFO had skipped out on the promised appearance.
Shanteoffered to provide the “Rapp” on the response record about this. They were impressed with her Rapping skills despite being only around 14-15 years old.
The group called UTFO (aka Untouchable Force Organization)had already released a single that featured on the A-side a single called – “Hanging Out”.
And on the B-side of the same single a track called“Roxanne, Roxanne”. However, it was to the surprise of the group that it was the B-single that became a major hit.
“Dj Red Alert (New York, USA) was the first deejay to grab it and start playing it. We were kind of pissed off at him and we were like, “What are you doing playing the B-Side. I think that you should be playing the A-Side. He refused to play the A-side and the rest is history.” - UTFO and Full Force.
UTFO - Roxanne, Roxanne - 1984
The group members of UTFO consisted of (Shiller Shaun Fequiere), Educated Rapper (Jeffrey Campbell), Doctor Ice (Fred Reeves), and Mix Master Ice (Maurice Bailey).
Marley Marl, the music producer of THE JUICE CREW replied in kind, by producing the response track called "Roxanne's Revenge" using the original beats from an instrumental version of "Roxanne, Roxanne"
Marley Marl is himself considered a legend within the world of Hip-hop Music
He was one of the first Hip-hop producers to truly popularise the use of the Sampler, and also really take seriously the use of James Brown's music within Hip Hop music.

And they were in a battle with the Brooklyn-based crew called UTFO (aka Untouchable Force Organization).
Both of these crews claimed that their district was the true home of hip-hop music.
The track called “Roxanne Revenge” became a huge hit and Shanté, who was only 14 years old at the time, became one of the first female MCs to become very popular, very quickly.
It was a track laced with expletives but was an instant hit that sold over 250,000 copies in the New York area alone.
She accused the UTFO of being sleazy and coming onto her multiple times, and each time she just turned them down. It went like this:
ROXANNE SHANTE - ROXANNE REVENGE - 1984
This was done entirely off the top of Shanté's head, which allegedly took place between laundry cycles in Marley Marl's apartment.
Soon Legal action followed in regards to Marley Marl using beats from the original “Roxanne, Roxanne" record. However, it was re-released again in early 1985 with new beats and the obscenities removed.
Miss Gooden soon took the name Roxanne after the record and Shante was her middle name. So was to be known simply as Roxanne Shante.
Following this, the "Roxanne Wars" began, with over 100 record releases on the subject of Roxanne. Roxanne Shanté, however, continued to rap, and now started to tour and became a star.
“Roxanne, Roxanne”, was originally a song about a woman who refused to be seduced by UTFO’S advances.
Roxanne went on to have another major beef with - Krs1 – Boogie Down Productions.
